Sarah Adams new 2011 jigsaw puzzle in the Gibsons puzzle catalogue follows in the tradition of Gibsons images in the style of local people performing daily tasks. In this image we are being told a story that is set in the not too distant past. It is the lock keeper's task to make sure that the barges pass in a safe and regulated fashion. Essentially the canal lock is a system that dates back the Roman times allowing canal traffic to pass to a higher or lower section of the canal. Once in between the two lock gates the barge can be made to rise or fall as the water levels can be adjusted. The cottage where the lock keeper lives has a splendid garden tended by family and must be the envy of the neighbourhood. It is well known that the maintainence of such beautiful lock keepers' gardens would be regarded as a tradition in the English countryside.
