Puzzle Description

Beads & Buttons 1000 piece jigsaw by Tony Ryan Gibsons (G6159).

Puzzle dimensions: 68 cms x 49 cms

Tony Ryan's jigsaw puzzle pictures fit in perfectly with the Gibsons jigsaw puzzle catalogue. Tony has a fantastic eye for astonishing detail as well as a sympathetic and unique sense of colour. In Beads and Buttons , a 1000 piece jigsaw from Gibsons, Tony has composed a picture location that is both charming and, who knows, one that we will, most likely, never experience again. There was a time when the shopping mall was unheard of and so, in order to have new clothes, it was necessary to make them. A great deal of imagination and skill was required to see the pattern book picture through to the finished garment. All that was required was a shop well stocked in various frock fabrics and accessories such as linings, buttons, thread and finishing tape such as ribbon. In Beads and Buttons, Tony has provided all of the above necessary items in a most pleasing composition as well as the added element of continuity through the generations. Here we have a mother showing her daughter the ropes (so to speak) of dress making.

It is interesting to note that there was up until very recently a huge catalogue business, at least in North America. Most famous of these was the Sears catalogue which was the size of a telephone book and in it were all kinds of merchandise not least of which were all the necessary products for making clothes. Sears has now, sadly, closed all its stores in Canada. There continues to be catalogue stores where the customer enters the retail establishment and browses the in store catalogues. The customer makes out a list of their requirements and someone behind the counter will then retrieve the items from the back of the shop which is stocked like a warehouse with shelves and boxes. The only reason such an establishment can survive today is the convenience of looking at something and returning it on the spot which is a service the store provides.

Our jigsaw puzzle shop is full of bolts of cloth of various patterns which are in the lower right foreground of the jigsaw. Mum and her daughter are examining the various fabrics. Any puzzler will delight in the challenge of such a variety of colour and design. The rest of the shop is a complex display of small wooden drawers full of colourful dress making accessories. Any number of coloured threads are in the lower left next to some picture patterns. There are buttons galore in the glass jars on the shelves above the threads. There are skeins of wool in a jaw dropping variety at the back left of the jigsaw just next to the hanging winter woolen jackets. Below the jackets are two mannequins displaying the finished results of what can be done with the goods supplied in the dressmaker's shop.

In the right background the owner of the shop is measuring some fabric perhaps for a dress she intends to make herself. All in all, this is a most pleasing, colourful and challenging jisaw puzzle for the enthusiast who enjoys the satisfaction of being able to assemble a wide variety of small objects in an equally wide variety of colours.

Beads and Buttons, G6159, is a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle from Gibsons. The exact same puzzle is also available in the 500 XL piece format, G3512. The XL pieces are about twice as large as the standard size jigsaw piece and are suitable for those who prefer the larger pieces but want to retain all the challenge and satisfaction of such a complicated and beautifully crafted jigsaw puzzle. Once assembled G3512, the XL version, has the same dimensions as a 1000 piece puzzle.

All Gibsons jigsaw puzzles are made of 100% recycled board and can be made over and over again.
